Ending their 18-year wait for a league title Arsenal won the First Division championship in the most closely fought race in the competition's history. With a squad containing a blend of youth and experience the Gunners, at one point, found themselves 11 points clear but a series of draws and inexplicable defeats allowed the gap to be closed. By the time Arsenal faced Liverpool on the final day, they were faced with an almost impossible challenge – win by a two-goal margin against the defending champions to claim the title. A cautious game plan was executed to perfection as Arsenal led after the break, and scored deep into stoppage time thanks to midfielder Michael Thomas sending the Arsenal fans into dreamland!
