Still in his first managerial position, Phil Parkinson guided Colchester to the Championship for the first time in their history. Prolific Scottish forward, Chris Iwelumo, finished the season as top scorer with 19 goals in all competitions. In addition, they had good a cup run, only being knocked out by then top flight champions Chelsea in the 5th round. One notable win in the season, came against rivals Gillingham, who were on the end of a 5-0 hammering in favour of the U's.
