Looking to bounce back into Division 1 at the first attempt, Walsall finished in 4th place, qualifying for the Playoffs. In a setback, Reading scored the opening goal from a throw in with Jamie Cureton's volley creeping in underneath Walsall goalkeeper Jimmy Walker. Don Goodman scored the leveler for Walsall just after the break to take the game into an extend period. Another goal for each team in extra time made for a tense affair, until Darren Byfield scored the winner for the Saddlers.
